The scenic drive to Everest Base Camp

While climbers on the south side of Everest have a nine day trek up the Khumbu to Base Camp, on the north side it’s possible to drive in by bus.

The sensible route involves a tarmac road most of the way, but our driver chose to take the scenic route by dirt track up and over high passes of the Tibetan plateau. This road is best done by Toyota Landcruiser, as it involves very rough track, sheets of ice across the road, and many fords across frozen streams.

Somehow we made it in our great big battle bus, though our driver had to keep getting out to inspect the axles.
