Snowshoes and Shipton

An ascent of Muztag Ata in the Chinese Pamirs. July/August 2007.

Friday 24 August, 2007 - Kashgar, Xinjiang, China

I spend most of today hanging out at John's Café in the main compound of the Qini Bagh, writing up my diary, checking e-mail, reading and sipping beer. Other members of our team drift in and out, and in the afternoon David, Orna and I hop in a taxi to check out Kashgar's only outdoor shop. It's tiny, although David who is 6'4" inches tall, does manage to buy a pair of trousers, so it's clearly not too badly stocked for a clothes shop in China.

In the evening we go for dinner at the Chinese restaurant in the Qini Bagh compound. There is a dead fish in the fish tank lying flat on its back. We christen it "Ali". I sit next to Juliet and we talk about our next mountain. We both seem to be drifting towards an 8000m peak. Juliet has managed to get the worst sunburn out of all of us. Her chin is purple and cracked like a drunkard's beard and she's hoping it's disappeared by the time she goes back to work next week. She's a doctor, and she thinks it might be a bit embarrassing.
