Summit Day, Mera Peak, Nepal
A snowcock at Khare campsite.
About 70cm long, the snowcock is usually seen in groups of around 4 to 15 birds on steep, stony slopes covered with sparse grass and herbs, from 3500m up to the snow line. It feeds on tubers, roots and leaves, and descends into subalpine forests during the winter. It has a habit of running uphill when disturbed by humans, but also has a quick downhill escape glide.
