Mera La to High Camp, Mera Peak, Nepal
A yellow-billed chough watches from a rock at High Camp.
About 45cm, the chough is a common high altitude bird of the Himalayas, inhabiting rocky ridges. It is sociable, often living in large groups, and is often seen indulging in aerial acrobatics, swooping and diving sharply. It uses its large bill to probe the ground for insects, grain and berries, but also scavenges after humans, hence its presence at High Camp where no vegetation grows.
