Mount Sinai, Sinai and Red Sea Coast, Egypt
A view of both routes up Mt Sinai: the gentler Camel Trail goes to the left, round the back of the mountain, while the steeper Steps of Repentance head up through the narrow cleft.
It took just under an hour and a half to climb the Camel Trail, although most guide books seem to say two to three hours. The hardest part during hours of darkness, when the mountain is usually climbed, is avoiding camels. The 3750 individual steps on the Steps of Repentance route were reputedly built by a monk as a form of penance. Quite what he did wrong does not appear to have been recorded!
