Sgurr Dubh Mor, Isle of Skye, Britain
Me on the summit of Sgurr Dubh Mor (944m), our third Munroe of the week.
The ascent of Sgurr Dubh Mor was the most interesting scramble of the four Monroes we climbed, and after being overtaken and then dropping behind a guided party, it took us several attempts to find a reasonable route to the top. It had been our intention to combine this ascent with an ascent of nearby Sgurr nan Eag, but once again we were overtaken by the weather upon gaining the ridge. We scrambled down from Sgurr Dubh an Da Bheinn in steadily reducing visibility, trying to find the ridge, but I decided that the likelihood of ending up in the wrong corrie in thick mist was too great a risk, and Tony reluctantly agreed that our Monroe bagging was over for the day. The descent was an enjoyable scramble, though with the rain becoming heavier, the crossing of smooth slanting slabs beneath Coir' a' Ghrunnda with waterfalls gushing around us produced the hairiest moments of the week. Once again, we arrived back at the car looking like a pair of drowned rats and glad of the flask of tea we had been carrying around with us.
