Am Basteir, Isle of Skye, Britain
Me on the summit of Am Basteir (935m), our first Munroe of the week.
The scramble to the summit is relatively straightforward, but for a drop of about three or four metres known as the 'Bad Step', with steep exposure on either side, particular to the north. Neither Tony nor I could face attempting this drop, though fortunately it is possible to find a way around it by retracing your steps and finding a route beneath the ridge. Shortly after this photograph was taken, we were overtaken by heavy rain clouds which reduced the visibility to about 20m. Our intention of moving on to Bruach na Frithe, the next Munroe along, was aborted and it took us several attempts to find our route back down the ridge. We experienced heavy rain all the way back to the car at Sligachan, and several items of kit got a severe soaking, most notably my GPS which I discovered had a limit to its 'waterproofability' easily exceeded by the Skye weather. It was unusable for the remainder of the week and didn't dry out again until my return to London. Tony joked that this, our first day out, was to be the best weather of the week. He wasn't far wrong, and this was to be the first of many soakings we experienced in his quest to bag a few more Monroes!
