Female ptarmigan on the side of Sron na Lairige.
Rarely seen below 850m, the Cairngorm plateau is one of the few areas of the UK this rare British bird can be seen. A white winter plumage gives way to the dappled white and speckled plumage seen here in summer, which camouflages the bird against rocks laden with brief patches of snow.
