A track through beech woodland on Berkhamsted Common.
Berkhamsted Common was famously enclosed by Lord Brownlow, owner of the Ashridge Estate, in 1866, who offered the commoners a stretch of land close to the town in exchange for their rights of access and use. However, another local landowner, Augustus Smith, took exception to the enclosure and hired a special midnight train from Euston Station and workers from London to come and take the fences down again. Most of the Common is now owned by the National Trust and commoners are again able to roam where they will.
