Berkhamsted Castle and Common, Day Walks 2004, Britain
Looking into the outer ward of Berkhamsted Castle from the keep.
The castle was built of flint and stone by William the Conqueror's half-brother Robert Mortmain in the 11th century, after the Norman Conquest. It was later destroyed by Prince Louis of France in 1216, during its occupancy by the Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas a Becket, in an attempt to seize the throne of England. It was then rebuilt and later occupied by Edward the Black Prince, the son of Edward III, in 14th century. The castle fell into disuse and ruin from 1495 onwards, and the final act of vandalism was carried out in 1838 when constuction of the London to Birmingham railway line led to the destruction of the barbican.
