El Chalten, Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, Argentina
A busy thoroughfare in El Chalten.
The village of El Chalten was only established as recently as 1985 and is in fact a product of the long-running border dispute between Argentina and Chile. Much of the Argentine population of southern Patagonia has been introduced to claim the land before the Chileans. El Chalten is just such a community, although its superb location on the edge of the Fitz Roy area of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares means that it now receives in excess of 20000 visitors, all of them either trekkers or climbers, a year.
