Elisabeth Horrell, 1944 - 2003
Mum was born at Fulmer Chase Maternity Hospital, Fulmer, Buckinghamshire, on 4 January, 1944. She died in tragic circumstances at Minions, Cornwall on 7 November, 2003, while out walking on the moors, when she slipped and fell down a bank, hitting her head on a rock and drowning in a pool at the bottom of the bank.
Assembled here is a miscellaneous collection of photographs from her more recent past. She was a very placid and gentle person, with a mischievous sense of humour lurking beneath the surface, and a sometimes childlike enthusiasm for things that others might regard as trivial. She loved the countryside and was never more at home than when she was in the garden, as these pictures show.

Walking through woodland in winter.

In front of a lake.

Pretending to be a gargoyle at Avebury Stone Circle, Wiltshire, in October 2001.

Doing a spot of gardening in the garden at Pengelly.

Looking out across Buttermere in the Lake District.

On a rock overlooking a harbour on the Isles of Scilly off the coast of Cornwall.

Standing in the garden at Pengelly, with some of the tree saplings she had planted behind her shoulder.

With her brother Peter and father Clifford, in the garden of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge.

In characteristic pose amongst the flowerbeds with her glass of gin and tonic.

With her friend Fay Simpson on their way through the archway from the lower part of Pengelly garden.

Creosoting a tree stump at Pengelly. The tree fell down in a gale many years ago and Mum wanted to preserve the stump - she said it looked like an octopus!

With Peter, ceremonially planting a ginkgo tree in the grounds of Lucy Cavendish College, in memory of her mother Jay Evans, one of the founders of the college, who died on 26 December, 2001.

Setting up a sun dial in Pengelly garden.

In front of stones on a windy day on the Isles of Scilly.

A classic pose: with gin and tonic in one hand, and leaf in the other, in the garden at Pengelly.

Enjoying a joke with Peter during the ginkgo-planting ceremony.
